JBDS were requested to undertake the Deep Drainage package at the iconic BBC TV Studios in White City.

The works were located on an access road running along the rear of the site, in between an occupied office and a reinforced concrete retaining wall. The site is approximately 7m below road level. Groundwater was present 400mm from commencement level.

JBDS sheet piled the ground adjacent to the retaining wall to protect the wall. We then commenced sinking a caisson shaft 7m deep which also had a 52m3 in-situ concrete jacking collar designed. This was the method prescribed by JBDS due to the poor ground conditions, primarily due to the high-water table. The hydraulic jacks pushed the caisson rings with the bottom cutting ring cutting through the london clay.

We then demolished and re-built the existing reinforced concrete pump chamber buried pump chamber adjacent. Once these works were complete, we commenced on the new petrol interceptor tank, JBDS piled a cofferdam around the proposed interceptor tank and excavated to a depth of 4m with the assistance of 2nr 6” pumps. JBDS excavated the saturated spoil, placed the interceptor tank carefully and surrounded in concrete. The works were carried out in 1m lifts, whilst matching the pressure internally within the tank with water so the tank would not collapse.

The team then commenced with the deep drainage, 45m of 150mm pipework which also required the construction of 3nr 4m deep MH’s.

Lastly, we excavated a 6m wide reduce dig, carrying on with the dig relating to the caisson, pump chamber & the interceptor. JBDS placed 6nr reinforced In-situ concrete BT Chambers which were prefabricated at ground level. We placed the free issue, gas pipe & water pipe from the reels provided on site and handed over to the utility companies for connection. Once all was complete we backfilled with MOT Type 1, then commenced on the construction of the reinforced concrete road base, before handing over for the nishing surfacing reinstatement to the client.
